Frequently Asked Questions
Although product stewardship has no regulatory or officially recognized definition, in most instances, product stewardship can be defined as minimizing the environmental, health, and societal impacts of manufacturing products across all lifecycle stages.
Effective product stewardship involves developing, executing, and maintaining policies, procedures, systems, tools, and people that enable compliant, safe, and sustainable development and manufacture of products.
Organizations have a responsibility for products they place on the market. Neglecting key elements of product stewardship can adversely affect your overall business, lowering your share of the market and return on investment in product development, as it can result in the inability to sell your products.
At a minimum, companies must comply with regulatory requirements, but those that invest in product stewardship also often prepare for future regulatory requirements and consider the opportunities beyond compliance through implementation of sustainability measures, circular engineering and design, and other environmental factors. Investing beyond compliance in your product stewardship program allows you to mitigate future business risks and can provide you opportunities to attract new customers through sustainability or product safety features, such as ecolabels.
In order to establish a robust product stewardship program, companies should start by considering the Core Competencies of Product Stewardship, as published by the Product Stewardship Society. These core competencies include the following:
- Global chemical and product safety regulations
- Safety Data Sheets (SDS), labels, and safe handling instructions
- Dangerous Goods transportation
- Banned and restricted substances management
- Sustainable product design and development
- Product safety testing
- Product exposure and risk assessment
- Recycling and take-back programs
- Green marketing claims and declarations
- Customer inquiries
- Adverse event recording and response
- Regulatory surveillance
After considering the core competencies as key elements of their product stewardship program, companies should ask themselves how they touch on all of these key aspects and what policies, procedures, systems, standards, tools, and responsible parties do they have in place to help them achieve their overall product stewardship goals. Each company will have different product stewardship aims, but using a systematic approach to evaluating their internal programs is key to long-term product stewardship success.
