The 14th Adaptation to Technical Progress (ATP) of the CLP regulation includes an Annex VI entry for Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) (EC No. 326-675-5, CAS No. 13463-67-7) as a Category 2 carcinogen.
The entry applies to respirable TiO2 particles and the hazard classification H351 (inhalation) will need to be applied to TiO2 powders.
The CLP amendments in Annex VI will be published if no objections are raised by the European Parliament and Council of Ministers, and the harmonised classifications will apply 18 months later.
Once passed into law, TiO2 will need to be labelled Carcinogenic Category 2 – H351 (inhalation) when it is in powder form containing 1% or more of particles with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm. Mixtures containing TiO2 will need to be labelled as carcinogenic when the mixture itself is in powder form and contains 1% or more of Titanium dioxide particles with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm.
