Are you a Canadian company?
Can you be considered the producer (or obligated reporting party) of Plastic Packaging (filled and unfilled), Electronic and Electrical Equipment (EEE), and/or Single-use or Disposable Products that will likely become part of household / residential waste?
If so, you have a lot of work to do, and a short time to do it.
The Federal Plastics Registry (FPR) is a mandatory reporting program for plastics manufactured, imported or placed on the market in Canada. FPR data will inform Canada wide program and planning decision making for efforts like the Canada-wide Action Plan on Zero Plastic Waste. What kind of reporting data does FPR require?
- The category and subcategory of packaging or plastic products (Example: Single-use or disposable products; foodservice ware)
- The resin type in packaging or plastic products (Example: Single-use or disposable products; foodservice ware; LDPE)
- The resin source in packaging or plastic products (Example: Virgin fossil-based resin, or post-industrial recycled resin)
- Quantity of each resin in packaging or plastic products in kg
- Calculation methods
Can a provincial packaging report be reused? Yes, but they may not have enough information.
The FPR requires data on each and every plastic, right down to the different types of plastic used in a multi-layer plastic film, and a description of a products subcategory (e.g. Packaging; unfilled; flexible; other packaging; LDPE)
The first reporting deadline is September 29, 2025.
Phase 1 reporting will require 2024 data on Plastic Packaging (filled and unfilled), Electronic and Electrical Equipment (EEE), and/or Single-use or Disposable Products. Reporting is only required on products that will likely become part of household / residential waste.
There is an exemption for small producers placing less than 1,000 kg of plastic on the market annually.
Take this brief questionnaire to determine if your company is exempt from FPR reporting.
