Canada’s Federal Plastics Registry (FPR) – Are you ready?

2 min read

We are just weeks away from the reporting deadline for Canada’s Federal Plastics Registry (FPR) – Are you ready?

Do you know how to use these formulas from the FPR?  We do.

Producers of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), packaging (filled and unfilled), and single-use (or disposable) packaging will need to report on each and every type of plastic in a product.  They will also need to report on the calculation method used to create the report.

Do you know how to translate RIC codes into NAPCS codes?  We do.

An obligated producer will need to identify a product’s plastic resin type not by the commonly used ASTM RIC code, but by Canada’s NAPCS code.  Plastic products are often marked with a number identifying the type of resin used to make the plastic.  The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International Resin Identification Coding System (RIC) is the source for the familiar 1 – 7 code (e.g. #1 PET, #2 HDPE).

FPR requires reporting to be done using the North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) code (e.g. 2811211 PET, 2811223 HDPE).

The FPR report is due on 29 September 2025.

Understanding the nuances and complexities of FPR reporting can be daunting.  CGlobal can help.  Get in touch today for support with Federal Plastics Registry.

⚠️ UPDATE: Federal Plastics Registry Phases 2 & 3 Delayed

Please Note: Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has officially delayed the implementation of Phases 2 and 3 of the Federal Plastics Registry. While Phase 1 obligations remain in effect, the reporting timelines for resin, industrial waste, and additional product categories have been pushed back.

A new Section 46 Notice is expected in Summer 2026 to provide updated guidance and timelines.
