Background
Denmark, once an outlier without EPR obligations for packaging, is now aligning with EU environmental practices. With revisions to the Danish Environmental Protection Act, the country is poised to introduce comprehensive producer responsibility for packaging for the first time.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Effective Date:
-
- On July 1, 2025, the extended producer responsibility for packaging will come into force in Denmark, making it one of the last EU countries to adopt this approach.
2. Obligations for Producers:
-
- Obligated producers—whether manufacturers, importers, or distributors—will have specific responsibilities under the EPR system.
- These responsibilities include registering, reporting expected packaging volumes, and paying fees associated with their recycling obligations.
Upcoming Requirements
While the EPR system won’t be fully operational until 2025, there are important steps that obligated producers need to take:
1. Registration and Reporting:
-
- Between April 1 and August 31, 2024, companies must register and report their estimated annual packaging volumes for 2024.
- The Danish Producer Authority (DPA) will oversee this process.
2. Selecting a Compliance Scheme:
-
- During the same period, obligated producers will need to choose a producer compliance scheme.
- The compliance scheme will play a crucial role in ensuring proper recycling and waste management.
ERP Denmark’s Role
ERP Denmark, part of the Landbell Group, will operate as a producer compliance scheme for packaging. In addition to its existing operations related to WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and batteries, ERP Denmark will now support companies in meeting their EPR obligations for packaging.
